"The most monstrous animals ever seen and that have ever been described in books are such a multitude that I would not know what to compare them to except for the fish in the sea. The country is literally covered with them." Francisco Vasquez De Coronado- 1540 |

The
first American Bison seen by the white man was a great surprise. The
Spanish who first observed it thought that they had come across a surprising
mixture of animals: the hump of a camel, the mane and the thighs of
the lion, the horns and the hoofs of an ox. At the time of the first
explorations, it was very common in the prairies, and lived in herds
consisting of hundreds of thousands head of cattle and it was the symbol
of the living richness of the new continent. The tribes of the North
American Indians considered this animal as the symbol of bounty as well
as symbol and unrivalled master of endless solitude.
