John I of Vico - 54mm. scale

The "monumental" style of this equestrian carving is enhanced by the presence of a beautiful Mastiff.

The origin of these Molossians is ancient: throughout all the centuries this breed has always been considered suitable for any type of activity, watch dog, parade dog and royal courts.

Herodotus already mentions the story of "enormous mastiffs" at the court of the King of Persia in 550 B.C. Even Julius Caesar in 55 B.C. noticed these mastiffs in England and was impressed by their size , so he brought some to Rome for use in circus combat.
